Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
An utterly compelling read, this is the story of ordinary people in the most extraordinary circumstances. Demick's study takes in the stories of a number of different people with very different lives, yet united by having eventually escaped the oppressive regime. But they all know others - often family members - who have fared less well. I hope that North Korea might open up in my lifetime, but for now, this is the closest I'm likely to get to a visit.
