Review: Shelf Life

Shelf Life
Shelf Life edited by Greg Ketter
My rating:         Speculative Fiction

There's a lot to love about Shelf Life: a collection of short stories set in bookstores, with fantasy and horror elements, written by some big  names. And several of the stories genuinely are novel and intriguing. The problem with putting them all together in an anthology is that they start to feel quite same-y, probably because there are just only so many ways you can write about the magic of a book shop (broadly: is it a magic shop, and hard to find? is it frequented by magical creatures? or is there a magic volume on the shelves?).

Individually, I enjoyed many (though not all) of these tales. Taken together, it was all a bit much, and I had to intersperse my reading with plenty of other books to get to the end.

I'm not a big fan of short stories because I just get into the story and then it's over although there are plenty of novels that I think COULD have been short stories. The idea was good it was just dragged out too long. I'd like to read the short stories you liked, though. I'll see if the library has this title. Thanks, Linda
