Review: City of Bones

City of Bones
City of Bones (Mortal Instruments #1)
by Cassandra Clare
My rating:         Urban Fantasy
Source: Library

City of Bones is an excellent start to the Mortal Instruments series of urban fantasy novels. Clary has grown up as any normal teenager, not realising that there's more to the world than meets the (untrained) eye. Then a chance encounter opens her eyes to a world of demons and downworlders - a world a human girl really shouldn't be able to see. It's cocky teen Jace who guesses she isn't really human at all, but rather a Shadowhunter like him, part of a race created to vanquish demons. For Clary, that's only the beginning of her life unravelling.

There's a love triangle between Clary, Jace, and her best friend Simon, which I found more engaging than most such triangles: the way Jace and Clary fell for each other was convincing, and I enjoyed the development of their relationship (with Simon watching, devastated, from the sidelines). The other relationships within the Shadowhunter community, of friends and family alike, were also well-drawn.

All in all, a great start to the series, and I can't wait to read the next one.
