Mrs Readalot's Bloggy Book Club - January Linkup

Mrs Readalot's Bloggy Book Club is a fun social link-up for book reviews: any genre, any time, anyone welcome. I'm hosting this month, and because this is the first  Book Club of the year, I thought I'd take this opportunity to share a few of my favourite books from last year, all written by authors I first discovered in 2012 (though some have been in print much longer).

Non-Fiction

Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North KoreaThe Mango Orchard
Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick - everyday tales from North Korea, shocking and fascinating in equal measure.

The Mango Orchard by Robin Bayley - the true story of a man who goes to Mexico to find his lost family.

Fantasy

Empire in Black and GoldShaman Healer Heretic Empire in Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky - epic fantasy war with unusual insect-inspired twist. (Series of 7 to date)

Shaman Healer Heretic by M. Terry Green - urban fantasy adventure featuring a thoroughly modern shaman. (Series of 3 to date)

Mystery/Thriller

Looking for TroubleFlat Spin
Looking for Trouble by Cath Staincliffe - realistic, gritty investigation of a young runaway. (Series of 5 to date)

Flat Spin by David Freed - a witty, ascerbic ex-assassin is pushed into an investigation he'd really rather not get involved in.

I put "Nothing to Envy" in my library request list. I don't generally do any book review posts on my blog but I did one a few months ago, called "Left to Tell" about a girl in college who survived the Rwandan holocaust. Very wonderful book. Happy new Year to you. Linda

Hi Rachel: Thanks as much for including Flat Spin on your 2012 fav list. The second mystery in the Cordell Logan series, Fangs Out, debuts in May. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Happy New Year and all good wishes,

David Freed

Oh I really like the look of those two non-fiction books! Will be popping them on my wishlist. :-)

I like the sound of the first two...I really don't delve into non-fiction as often as I should, so I'll be sure to look out for these.
